This is the website of the Dyer Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Dyer Tennessee. NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR We, as Christians ought to carry written on our hearts the solemn truth of how short a time we have to witness for God. Whatever we are going to do for Christ we had better do now. We had better be sharing our testimony while we have the power to do so. If we are ever to study the Scriptures, if we are ever to spend time in prayer, if we are ever to win souls for Christ, if we are ever to invest our finances for His kingdom, it must be now. “As long as it is day, we must do the work of Him who sent Me. Night is coming when no one can work.” - John 9:4 Blessing See you Sunday! Bro. It is a season of prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and spiritual renewal, helping us reflect on Christ's sacrifice and grow closer to God. The word "Lent" comes from the 'old English lencten' or springtime spring and from West Germanic langitinaz or long days or lengthening of the day. The 40 days of Lent - the period leading up to Easter that starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. Commonly observed by Roman Catholic, Eastern and some Protestant churches these 40 days as a time of personal reflection to prepare your heart and mind for Good Friday and Easter. What is Ash Wednesday? February 18 Lent starts with Ash Wednesday, the day when you might see people with a cross of ashes on their foreheads. These ashes are a reminder of our need for repentance and the reality of our human frailty. The ash marks symbolize sorrow and mourning over sin. The Biblical support for this observation comes from the following verses: Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes (Daniel 9:3 ). There was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting and weeping and lamenting, and many of them lay in sackcloth and ashes (Esther 4:3 ). What is Palm Sunday? March 29 Last Sunday of Lent and begins Holy Week which is the week leading up to Easter and the final days of Jesus's life. It also marks Jesus' arrival to Jerusalem, when people welcomed him by waving Palm branches recognizing Him as their King. What is Maundy Thursday? April 2 This day remembers the Last Supper, when Jesus shared a final meal with His disciples and demonstrated His humility by washing their feet. What is Good Friday? April 3 The day is a solemn day that commemorates Jesus’ crucifixion and His ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Despite its sorrowful events, it’s called “Good” because of the redemption Jesus secured for us. What is Holy Saturday? April 4 This is a day of quiet reflection, as we remember Jesus’ time in the tomb and anticipate the joy of what’s to come. Finally, Easter Sunday bursts forth with celebration: Jesus is alive! His resurrection offers us hope, new life, and the promise of eternity with Him. What is Holy Week? Holy Week is a solemn time, with Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday , Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil playing significant roles in preparing for Easter. Good Friday services involve veneration of the cross, scripture readings, and prayers, culminating in the Easter Vigil on Saturday night, a highly symbolic and sacred celebration of Christ’s Resurrection, often including baptisms and scripture reflections. Easter Sunday then marks the joyous conclusion of Lent, celebrating Christ’s victory over death with a high emphasis on the Eucharist and resurrection hope. What is Easter? April 5 Easter rejoices in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, signifying victory over sin and death. It is a day of great joy, marked by sunrise services, festive gatherings, and proclamations of “He is risen!” *Source: Christianity.com Lent Booklet Welcome! • Christian Endeavor | dyer-cp-church1

Christian Endeavor The idea for the Christian Endeavor started in a discussion among members of the Upper Room Sunday School class of the Dyer Cuumberland Presbyterian Church in early 1992. The class was discussing ways of showing Christian love in the community, and serving those who are in greatest need seemed to be a good way of showing this love. Originally, through a generous rental agreement from a local businessman, a suitable building was secured. For a period of time, class members operated with class funds and donations from a few people who believed in the mission of the Christian Endeavor. In an effort to extend this service, other community churches were invited to participate. Through this effort, donations of money, used clothing, toys, and furniture increased. Additional volunteers began working as well. A board of directors, with representatives from each participating church, help to govern the operations of the Christian Endeavor. They do not charge for items in the store, nor do they have cash avaiable. They do provide food and other items for individuals and familaies who have a great need. Donations of funiture, gently used clothing, and money are always needed. Volunteers are welcomed and needed as well. The LORD has blessed this ENDEAVOR.

Operation Christmas Child Monthly Donations Each month, we are focusing on collecting specific items to prepare for our shoebox packing in November. Feel free to donate any of the items on the below list any time during the year but we wanted to make sure that we had enough to surpass our 30 boxes from last year! We can do it if we all work together. In November we will have our annual packing party and shoe box dedication before we mail them to bless those less fortunate around the world. For years, our change has gone to the Children's Home. The Mission Committee of has decided to use this money closer to home. The money is going to go toward our VBS program this summer. July The Mission Committee will be collecting School Supplies to be given out during Dyer School's annual Open House (date to be determined) The month of November, the giving project will be the Loaves and Fishes Project that provides hot lunches to people in the Philippines.
